Que consumo? / What do I tend to consume?

Alimentación:

Cada vez que puedo, compro alimentos orgánicos y que soporten comunidades vulnerables o en desarrollo, y trato de comprar local.

En general intento no comprar cosas que vengan con muchos empaques. Tengo varias bolsas de lona con las cuales voy a hacer el mercado de frutas y vegetales para no pedir bolsas plásticas, pero de vez en cuando debo pedirlas pues las pequeñas las utilizo para recoger los desechos de mi perro, y las mas grandes las utilizo para recoger las basuras.

Everytime I can (it is not easy or cheap to find) I buy organic foods that support vulnerable or developing communities, and I try always to buy local.

Generally I try not to buy things that come in a lot of packaging or non-recyclable materials. I have some fabric bags to go shopping (fruits and veggies). Anyway, every once in a while, i have to ask sometimes for bags, because I need little bags to pick up my dog's waste, and big ones to collect my garbage.

Con el uso del agua soy bastante rígida. Lavo la ropa cada dos semanas, y la lavadora de la casa tiene sistema para regular el nivel de agua de acuerdo a la cantidad.

Para lavar la loza, siempre busco métodos que me permitan ahorrar la mayor cantidad del liquido, como por ejemplo limpiar los residuos antes de poner los platos en el lavaplatos, y enjabonar todo con el agua cerrada y luego enjuagar todo al mismo tiempo.

I am really rigid with the use of water. I wash my clothes once every two weeks, and the washing machine has a water level regulator.

To wash the dishes, I always look forward for the best method to save water. For example, cleaning all the remainings before putting the dish in the dish washer, put al the soap without water and then watering everything at the same time.

Ademas al momento de cocinar trato siempre de limpiar las verduras en un platon con agua que después utilizo para regar mis plantas.

También tratamos de economizar agua soltando la cadena cada vez que es necesario únicamente.

En la ducha es donde mas gasto agua y me gustaría cada vez ajustar mejor la cantidad de tiempo y agua que utilizo allí. Creo que podría economizar mucha agua. Algunas veces recogemos el agua que cae fría y esta se utiliza para los inodoros. También probé un tiempo bañarme con un balde pero se pierde agua mientras se espera que caliente.

Y también podría utilizar agua fría, pero a veces me parece un poco difícil pues hace mucho frió en Bogotá.

When I cook, I try to wash the veggies in a container, and I use the water for the garden.

We also try to save water only flushing the water when it is necessary.

In the shower is where I spend more water, and I'd like to adjust this in terms of time and water. I think I could save a lot of water there. Sometimes we collect the cold water and we use it for the W.C. I also tried some time to take the shower only with a bucket. But you loose a lot of water while the water gets hot.

And I coul use cold water to shower shortly, but it is alittle difficult because Bogota is very cold.

Papel

Utilizo mucho papel para organizar mis tareas y para llevar nota de lo que aprendo y vivo.

Tengo la mala costumbre de utilizar papelitos para anotar cosas que debo hacer aunque ya lo tenga anotado en mi agenda. Y también para anotar teléfonos y razones... Todo esto podría ahorrarlo si utilizara bien mi agenda o si la cambiara por unos buenos ejercicios de atención y memoria.

Paper

I use a lot of paper to organize mi homeworks and to take note of what i learn and live. I have the bad habit of using little papers to write things therat I already have in my schedule book, And also to write numbers and notes. I could use some exercises of memory and atention.

Transporte

Cada día gasto entre 4 y 7 dolares en transporte publico, dependiendo de la cantidad de cosas que tenga que hacer afuera. A veces cuando el clima lo permite hago todos mis desplazamientos en la bicicleta, lo cual me ahorra mucho dinero, mientras hago ejercicio y disfruto del paisaje. Además en Bogotá, es mas rápido andar en Bicicleta que en transporte publico o carro particular.

Tambien a veces utilizo el carro de mi papá, cuando debo hacer algo que implique trasladar muchas cosas o ir con varias personas.

Everyday I spend betwwen 4 and 7 USD in public transportation, depending on the things I have to do outside. Sometimes when the weather allows me, I go everywhere in my bike, which makes me save a lot of money while i do exercise and enjoy the city landscape. By the way, in Bogota it is faster to ride bike than drive a car or go by bus. I also use the car of my fahter to carry heavy things or when I have to take other people to the same place.

Vestuario

Solía comprar mucha ropa, pero hace un tiempo que solo consumo lo necesario. Trato de comprar ropa hecha en mi país, aunque cuando viajo no puedo evitar comprar ropa o cosas (poco) que no encuentro en Colombia. Creo que se puede tener un estilo propio sin necesidad de gastar mucho dinero en ropa y accesorios.

Soy muy sencilla para todo lo que tiene que ver con apariencia personal, no uso maquillaje ni me gusta utilizar productos para pintar el pelo, las uñas, o cambiar nada de la apariencia física.

Clothes, accesories, and make up.

I used to buy a lot of clothes, but a while ago i left that habit. I just buy the necesary things. I try to buy clothes made in Colombia (when I travel I can't help to buy something that I won't find in Colombia). I think you can have your own style buying cheap.

I am very simple in this things of personal appearance, i don't wear make up, or use things to dye hair or nails or anything that uses chemicals to change appearance.

My Excess

Periódicamente regalo las cosas que ya no uso, y trato de que mi familia y mis amigos también lo hagan (con los papas es un poco difícil... quieren guardar todo!)

De hecho hace menos de un mes regale muchas cosas que ya no usaba, e hice una colecta de ropa y juguetes con mis amigos, y todo lo recogido lo lleve a un viaje que hice a la región donde trabajo, incluso regale parte de la ropa que lleve para el viaje.

I give away periodically the things that I don't use anymore, and I try that my family and friends do the same (it's a little difficult with my parents... they want to keep everything!!)

In fact, less than a month ago, I did a trip to the region where I am working, and I made a big collect, with all my friends, and I gave away a lot of things, mostly clothes, toys and books. I even gave away part of the clothes I had taken for working there.

De todos modos organice nuevamente toda la casa y escogí cosas que ya no uso tanto, y fui al cuarto de almacenamiento y saque cosas que quería regalar hace mucho tiempo pero no sabia a quien.

Anyway, I re-organized my house this week, and I chose other things that I don't use that much, and I dove into the attic and found some things that I have not used for a loooong time, I wanted to give the away but I didn't know to whom.

La mayoría de la ropa y juguetes los lleve a la fundación de una amiga que trabaja con recicladores. Los libros los entregue a un señor que tiene un club de lectura con los niños del pueblo donde vive. Y parte de la ropa y algunos objetos se los regale a la mujer que nos ayuda en la casa, quien periódicamente recibe parte de lo que no usamos y lo distribuye entre sus hijos y vecinos.

Most of the clothes and toys, I took them to the foundation of a friend, who works with recyclers. The books went to the reading club of a man I know, who reads with the children of his town. Part of the clothes and some objects, I gave them to the lady that helps us in the house. Periodically she gets the things we don't use, and gives away everything in her neigborhood and to her family too.

Siempre se siente bien entregar las cosas que uno ya no usa. Y ademas esto hace que uno se de cuenta que que podría vivir con menos cosas... y aun estar cómodo! Creo que es una buena experiencia, solo pensar como seria, y mejor hacerlo! Experimentar como es vivir con menos, que es lo que realmente necesitas para vivir bien y feliz. Ultimamente, pienso mucho cuando voy a comprar algo... necesito esto? o que puedo reutilizar de lo que tengo en casa para hacer lo mismo? Esto tambien hace pensar acerca del desperdicio... muchas veces desperdiciamos solo por no pensar cuanto necesitamos realmente. Es facil hacer el cambio y se siente bien.

It always feels good to give away the thigns that you don't use, and it makes you realize that you could live with less things, feeling comfortable still. I think that this is a good experience, just to think... and better to experience with how much can you live comfortably and be happy... Lately I think a lot about buying things... I really need that? What could I use that I have at home and achieves the same result? And It also makes you think about waste, sometimes you waste just for not thinking about how much do you really need. It is easy to make the switch and feels good.

I present you my trash / Les presento mi basura.

Hace aproximadamente 3 años tengo el sistema de reciclaje en mi casa, y cada vez le hago mejoras... Por ejemplo, hace tres meses ya no estoy botando a la basura ningún plástico y ningún papel.

It's been like 3 years since I am recycling at home, and everytime Ican I improve the system. For example, three months ago I am no longer throwing away any plastic or paper.

Lo único que es realmente desecho es esto:

- residuos de alimentos cocinados

- residuos de alimentos de proveniencia animal (carne - no mucha pues aunque mi familia no es vegetariana, yo soy la cocinera, asi que generalmente son vegetarianos por obligación; leche)

- papel higiénico

- materiales contaminados (grasa en exceso)

- frutas cítricas

The only things that I really discard are:

- cooked food

- meat (Not that much, because I am the cook, so my family adjusts to my diet, but every onece in a while they eat meat)

- Milk waste

- toilet paper

- citric fruits

Los demás residuos orgánicos como cascaras de huevo, vegetales y frutas, cafe y te, van a una caneca especial que tengo para descomponerlos con ayuda de EM (bokashi), el cual les ayuda a liberar los lixiviados, que posteriormente utilizo para regar los arboles de la calle.

Cuando la caneca se llena, al cabo de aproximadamente 2 semanas, llevo los residuos al jardín de unos amigos que hacen compost.

The other organic waste, like egg shells, vegetables, fruits, coffee and tea, go directly to a special garbage can in wich they get a little dehydrated with EM ( i use the leachate mixed with water to water the plants outside) and then they pass to the compost pile in the garden of my friends. This can is filled every two weeks. And the leachate is coming out every five days.

Todos los residuos plásticos y algunos metálicos, los utilizo para hacer ladrillos plásticos. Utilizo las botellas de agua, secas y limpias, y las lleno con estos empaques, secos y limpios también, y presiono mucho para que quede muy compacto. Cada botella de 600ml se llena mas o menos en un mes (así que imaginen cuanto tarda en llenarse una de 3lt) y cuando tengo varias botellas llenas, las llevo a dos lugares donde tienen proyectos de construcción con estos ladrillos.

I use all the plastic and metallic scraps to make building blocks. I use the water bottles (i don't buy that much, but I collect them from the yoga center) and i fill them with all kind of plastic packages (clean and dry), and press them really hard so i can have tight blocks. Each bottle (600ml) fills totally in something like 3 weeks, or more. And whe I have a few ready I take them to one of two places that build houses with this blocks.

Con las botellas grandes de gaseosa estoy construyendo varios jardines de vegetales colgantes en mi casa y en casa de otros amigos, y la idea es que una vez tengamos resultados, mucha gente se una al proyecto y así aprovechar mas botellas cada vez.

With the big soda bottles (I also collect them from several places like, grandma's house, father's office, friends houses) I am building urban vegetable gardens in my house, and some friends houses, and the idea is to get a lot of people to join the movement.

Con el papel hago y enseno a hacer objetos de uso y nuevo papel.

With the paper I do and teach kids how to do objects, and new paper.

En todo caso, ha sido todo un proceso, y no solo yo sino mi familia también, tenemos mucho cuidado de los productos que escogemos, y de los empaques en que estos vienen. Tratamos siempre de no comprar cosas que traigan demasiados empaques o que vengan empacadas en materiales no reciclables o reutilizables.

Anyway, it's been a process, and we are really careful in the moment of choosing what product to buy. We try not to buy things that have a lot of packaging, or that we cannot recycle or re-use.
